Lil Jon

Lil Jon is revamping the rap scene with his own version of loud, mosh pit-inducing crunk music. The producer/rapper brings an in-your-face, XXX-rated element to his unique genre, never holding back his un-PC lyrics. This means that, as much as his hits are addictive, his whole act is so over-the-top that it's humorous, prompting his trademark shouts of "Okay!" and "What?" to be heard everywhere.

Born in 1970 in Atlanta, Georgia, Jonathan Smith a.k.a. Lil Jon got his start in the music business as a club DJ. After making a name for himself locally, renowned producer Jermaine Dupri asked Jon to join Dupri's record label, So So Def. Soon, Lil Jon became executive vice president of A&R (Artist & Repertoire) and, for seven years, worked the post while also spinning beats as a dancehall and hip-hop DJ on a radio show for Atlanta's V103.

Success of the first album encouraged Lil Jon and his East Side Boyz friends to release their second album dubbed "Put Yo Hood Up". The album's single "Bia Bia" featuring Ludacris, Too Short, and Chyna Whyte became a hit in clubs throughout the US and also made the top twenty downloads on MP3.com. A year after, Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz released their breakthrough album "Kings of Crunk".

In addition to the previous success, the album's first single "I Don't Give a ****" featuring Mystikal and Krayzie Bone, became another hit. However, it was "Get Low" with the Ying Yang Twins and its catchy hook "from the window to the wall" that became a breakout hit. As an obvious evidence, the single reached the top 5 in a composite worldwide R&B chart; compiled from U.S., German, French, UK, and Australian R&B charts. Moreover, it also went into the top 40 in markets such as Germany and Australia.

As a result of the success of "Get Low," the album "Kings of Crunk" would make the top twenty of the US album chart.

Other similar artists sharing the spotlight are Lil Wayne, Lil Boosie and Lil Scrappy.

In recent time Lil Jon released his new album called "Crunk Juice," which features contributions from Rick Rubin, R. Kelly, Ice Cube, Timbaland, Usher, and Ludacris. A Double-CD of "Crunk Juice" includes remixes of Daddy Yankee's Reggaeton hit "Gasolina," as well as skits from comedians Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock, was soon produced. Lil Jon will also be working with Korn for a track on their next album.
